Overview of NDA Physical Test Requirements

For Indian Army

  • The permissible variation is 10% above the average height. 
  • Height may be relaxed by a maximum of 2 cm if the Medical Board confirms that the applicant will develop and achieve the required height by the end of their training. 
  • Candidates hailing from the Lakshadweep region can receive a height exemption of 2 centimetres. 
  • To enlist in the armed forces, female candidates need to be at least 152 cm tall, while male candidates must be a minimum of 157 cm in height. 
  • Applicants from the North Eastern Hills, as well as those from the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, along with Gorkhas, can qualify with a minimum height of 148 cm for females and 152 cm for males. 
  • Candidates who are younger than 18 will be allowed an added height allowance of 02 cm. 
  • Applicants must be in good physical and mental health, without any illnesses or disabilities.

For Indian Navy

  • The required minimum sitting height is 81.50 cm and the maximum is 96 centimetres. 
  • A Minimum leg length of 99 cm and the maximum is 120 cm. 
  • The thigh length should not exceed more than 64 cm. 

Indian Air Force

  • The Flying Branch requires a minimum height of 162.5 cm.  
  • For Gorkhas, the acceptable minimum height will be 5 cm below the standard, while for individuals from Uttarakhand’s hilly regions and North-Eastern India, it is set at 152.5 cm.  
  • Candidates from the Lakshadweep area can be 2 centimetres shorter than the standard height, making the minimum permissible height 155.5 cm.

Requirements To Meet Clear The Physical Test During The NDA Exam

  • Running can be extremely beneficial. Candidates should aim to run daily for a distance of at least 2.5 kilometres. Additionally, candidates should time their runs; for example, the target time for the NDA is to complete 2.5 kilometres in 17 to 18 minutes. 
  • Including skipping as part of physical conditioning is recommended. Daily practice of 1 to 2 hours can greatly aid in meeting the physical fitness standards required by the NDA. Skipping improves the strength and capacity of both the arms and legs.
  • Functional training is a vital aspect of the defence sector. This is due to its potential to enhance both physical and mental awareness in dynamic operational settings, which is crucial for NDA physical assessments. Functional fitness contributes to improved balance by enhancing power, strength, flexibility, speed, endurance, agility, and coordination.
  • There are various methods to boost overall functional fitness, but push-ups and sit-ups have been shown to be particularly effective. Applicants should strive to do at least 20 of each exercise daily, with the possibility of increasing the number every five days as their endurance improves.
  • Candidates may also practice 8-10 chin-ups each day. Other forms of functional fitness include crunches, burpees, and jumping jacks, which significantly enhance a candidate’s stamina.
  • To develop endurance, candidates can engage in activities like stair climbing, chest touches, forward and reverse rolls, and rope climbing, all of which are effective for building endurance. A rope of 3 to 4 meters can be used for the rope climbing exercises.
